It is also possible for other parties, like personal injury attorneys, to obtain copies of these records when their clients are injured in an automobile accident. Employers and government agencies may also access driving records when conducting background checks. Insurance companies use driving records to evaluate a driver’s accident risk to determine what rates to charge.
Where Can Driving Records Be Obtained?
Drivers may be able to obtain a copy of their driving record from their insurance agent. Indiana drivers can also obtain a copy of their driving records by going directly to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. There are two types of driving records available.
The Viewable Driver Record (VDR) can be viewed online for free after creating an IN BMV online account. When creating an account, the driver will need to enter his or her driver license number, Social Security number and the zip code that appears on his or her driver license.
An Official Driver Record (ODR) is a certified copy of a driving record that comes with a certification letter from the BMV. This type of record is often required by employers or school admission offices. Currently, a fee of $4 is charged for an ODR. It is possible to obtain an ODR online by creating an IN BMV online account and paying for it online with a credit or debit card. It is also possible to request an ODR in person at an Indiana BMV office or by mailing a completed Form 53789 – Request for Driver Records and paying the $4 fee. This form can be downloaded online.
Information That a Driving Record Shows
A driving record typically shows information about incidents that occurred during a three to five year period, including:
- Accidents
- Traffic violations
- Criminal convictions
- License suspensions
- Expiration of license
How Can Mistakes Be Corrected on a Driving Record?
Driving records are usually accurate. However, it is not uncommon for mistakes to be present. It is a good idea for drivers to check their driving records for errors that could jeopardize their employment, insurability, or driving privileges. Some issues can be resolved directly with the IN BMV. Others like failure to pay tickets, delinquent child support, or unsatisfied judgments will need to be addressed with the court.
